Tall grass obscurity

Multi room red sandstone pueblo observed today in tall grass as a prehistoric archeological site. Grand evidence of occupation on this land. Its a privilege to walk this land and observe the remains of native ancestors.

Abert Squirrels eat these when available.

Blessed Rain!!! Monsoon season fills our forest with many kinds of mushrooms, a veritable harvest. Be careful though, you have to know which ones are safe before collecting them for your dinner table. But the variety of shape and color is fantastic as they explode overnight.

Meadow perfection...

Walking the high country drains in midsummer, during the monsoon season, only leads to scene after scene of grandeur and beauty. Springs and ponds filled with forest frogs, unexpected in a place where severe winters occur, dot the spaced along side wildflowers, birds and butterflies.

Monsoon Rains make my job and this project a banquet, mixing prehistory with natural history, in northern Arizona.

Edible root, medicinal

It looks like a giant dandelion... it isn't. Its a Wild Purple Oyster Flower, observed this time of year in grassy slopes throughout our forest. It has a large purple flower on a thick stem rising from a clump of grassy leaves. The carrot shaped root is edible and harvested as an herbal medicine. You could survive on this plant. I spotted this in the riparian canyon downstream from Griffith Spring just off Hwy 89. This area is a wild botanical arboretum in August.

New plant types after fire.

Mullein is just one local plant that explodes with growth after a fire. Here, a few years after a wildfire new plants are growing so densely that is difficult to take a walk avoiding the charcoal. East side of the San Francisco peaks.

Lambert's Locoweed 8000 ft San Francisco Peaks

Flagstaff Environs. Monsoon bounty, summer rain, summer nutrition for the forest. This is the healthiest example of a Lambert’s Locoweed, Oxytropis lambertii,  I’ve ever seen, located high up on the north side of the San Francisco Peaks. I couldn’t resist taking this pic.

Shortest Day and Longest Day... Every Year.

2nd Prehistoric Solstice marking petroglyph...  confirmed.

In 35 years of exploring northern Arizona, discovering and recording heretofore unrecorded archaeological sites, I actually found two solar shadow solstice markers. This photo collage confirms the most recent.

It takes at least one complete year to gather the evidence required to verify the shadows and how they interact on the longest day and the shortest day of the year. The top photo here captures the shadow behavior on the winter solstice and the lower photo displays what happens on June 21st, every year.

Once you witness one of these your admiration for the skills of prehistoric people goes straight up. Their sheer observation and calculation without clocks or calendars as we know them is amazing. The accuracy is humbling.

Some of the sites I've recorded have been confirmed by the establishment. This is one.

A perfect picture postcard... Spring rain!

The desert is transformed by rainwater and this Prickly Pear Cactus is proof. Like jewels in the midst of black volcanic sand these overly saturated colors seem too good to be true. And we are drawn to them because of this contrast.
