Do You See What I See?

For the second time I have discovered a two-headed snake, even though these petroglyphs are over nine miles apart they are strangely similar in execution. This implies to me that this symbol or idea is an archetype in "their" culture. What that may be is anyone's guess.

During this week's hike, walking a drainage near several ruins, I observed this unique chert point in a sand bed just below one of the rock art panels. This point has so many special features. It appears to have been smoothed round eliminating the original sharp point. It has also apparently been tossed around in this sand by flowing water for a long time as it is now polished as if it has been in a lapidary tumbler, removing some of the original knapped scallops. could have been a knife point. Jewel-like beauty.

High altitude forestry is evident amongst today's bracken ferns on San Francisco Peaks. You can still find hand cut ponderosa pine tree stumps from logging 100 years ago!

PREHISTORIC WINTER SOLSTICE MARKER...  Confirmed 2014

This is my second confirmation of a shadow/petroglyph configuration that marks the shortest day of the year. This one is also in northern Arizona. Notice, in the background a petroglyph mostly composed of a spiral snake figure, the tail cannot be explained. The snake is drawn in a counter clockwise spiral with a large round head. At precisely noon on December 21st the point of a sunlight dager points at the tip of the round head shape. This is actually observable for several days before and after the 21st of the month. This panel of images, carved on the floor of an escarpment that faces the sunrise, is just a small portion of the many other images in this gallery.

Black Volcanic Sand, White Snow and a Dormant Rabbitbrush...

A spontaneous mobile device photograph while on a hike after recent snow fall. I love the compliment of winter colors and textures in this bouquet of items. The crisp air and bright sunlight only make it better, beyond belief actually, and its all mine! At any rate, during the winter months with low horizon sunlight I find all of these dormant plants great subjects for out door photography.  Photo share from Rascal's Perch

FINDING YOUR WAY...

For over 35 years I have hiked northern Arizona, observing both natural history and prehistory. During the past year and a half I have maintained a journal of my field experiments testing various GPS apps on my Android Devices. The accompanying image is a screenshot from a recent hike on a trail new Mt Elden, north of Flagstaff, Arizona.

My phones are also my dedicated GPS devices.

Exquisite Cliff Dwellings...

The day I recorded my discovery of these prehistoric cliff dwellings. Observe just how intact and geometric the original walls remain today, in the photo inset, looking straight down into the ruins. These substantially built pueblo were built on a shelf provided by erosion of the depositional limestone that covers Arizona and, like it is here, is often covered by a large basalt layer, the result of a molten hot lava flow. Remarkable.

Hiking and biking with digital mobile devices as I do leads to these rare moments in the field. My phones are also my dedicated GPS devices. Having your GPS / smartphone firmly mounted to your bicycle handlebars is a minimum requirement for bumpy field work and navigation back to the vehicle. Imprinted ARIZONA Gifts For Sale. Jubilation? Awareness? What's all of the excitement about?

A most amazing pair of images creating this petroglyph panel. Is it unfinished? Another Deadman treasure. Discovered on one of my hiking adventures. Just one panel amongst a large gallery.
