Do You See What I See?

For over 40 years I have conducted day hikes around northern Arizona with my mobile devices, I observe moments and events that I want to capture - photo or illustration. Fleeting moments that capture my eye. Sometimes these results are exceptional considering the calibre of the camera and software that I have on my digital tools. Artistic APPs are sometimes applied to these images. This repository is an album where I display the results of this activity. Please enjoy this online photo album. Natural History and Prehistory are my themes.

“I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” John Burroughs 1837 - 1921.

I have discovered and recorded over 2000 prehistoric archaeological sites in this quest. In a contemporary context I observe the geology and biology of how the environment appears today. I hope that you enjoy this personal journal of my Arizona Day Hikes.

This photo was taken late in summer during the monsoon season. I am standing before a multi room, multi story, prehistoric pueblo, in a "ruined" condition today. Yes, a large RUIN in today's vernacular. It has not been vandalized. It is in the exact condition that it should be, having been deteriorating and collapsing now for hundreds of years.

I wonder what the sight of the distant rainstorm would have meant to them as "moisture" was so much of their culture and belief system.

Treasures everywhere!

Walking in local washes following the recent heavy rains, this morning I found a Brickell Bush lush with freshly laid insect eggs on one leaf. A huge pot sherd remains in place where I found it. Then a panel of petroglyphs at the entrance of a small cave. What a banquet!

Flagstaff Prehistory. Monsoon Blessings. Often seen on my hikes in northern Arizona during this season, I’ve been informed by a professional botanist that this native plant is called Coyote Wild Tobacco, Nicotiana attenuata, I read that it is medicinal and ritualistic to indigenous people. In the moment of this photo it is just beautiful.

Flagstaff History. Riordan Sawmill era. Handcut Ponderosa Pine tree 100 years ago. I’ve had one of my hiking photos imprinted onto my smartphone, which is appropriate as I use the mobile device as a camera and for GPS navigation. My experience is enriched. My better photos end up in this gallery.   http://bit.ly/1FdYZfD   Enjoy!

Sacred Birds... my oil painting

Bragging rights!   Why are there parrot designs in southwest pottery? Apparently, because parrots of various species, imported from Central America, were part of their daily lives. I read that many remains are found ritually buried with notable people from the past. Here’s a snapshot of my macaw painting on display at the Wupatki Visitor Center. It represents three years of research and preparation.

Child's play...

Flagstaff Environs. Those who came before… I was standing in the center of the largest room of one of my favorite ruins, built of massive wall stones, when at my feet I spotted this thimble-sized piece of clay. It was goose bump time as I actually felt I was trespassing and privy to a domestic moment. The evidence was in my hand. I have read that the female potter would make miniatures as toys for her children. Is that what this is? I am privileged.
