Moist and cool relief

Moss on Basalt. Deep in the cool shadows of well eroded basalt drains I find this velvety green moss in nearly every canyon I visit. It seems out of place in a high desert. Such contrast.  I’ve never been able to identify this species. Ideas? Observation of a native plant in my paradise during a day hike! Adding an artistic touch to the commonplace. My themes: Prehistory and Natural History. “I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” John Burroughs 1837 - 1921.

Female Saltbush, male plants have no seeds.

Four-winged Saltbush in Spring. An oat-like seed exists in the center of each set of wings. Although salty these are very nutritious. Was a small portion ground on a metate by indigenous people and used to provide meal seasoning? I wonder. Observation of a native plant in my paradise during a day hike! Adding an artistic touch to the commonplace. My themes: Prehistory and Natural History. “I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” John Burroughs 1837 - 1921.

Sharps and dull contrast in Nature

Narrow-leaf Yucca… contrasted in front of a dark basalt escarpment. Great observations in my paradise during day hike! Adding an artistic touch to the commonplace. My themes: Planet, Climate, Food, Health. “I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” John Burroughs 1837 - 1921.

Facing sunrise overlooking the long canyon.

Petroglyph Notice!” While investigating the native plants in one of our basalt canyons today I noticed some images on a stone escarpment high above me. A closer look confirmed this incredible panel, confining all images to this single stone face, about five feet high. Quite remarkable. Great observations in my paradise! Adding an artistic touch to the commonplace. My themes: Planet, Climate, Food, Health. “I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” John Burroughs 1837 - 1921.

March 2017...

“Signs of Spring” On today’s day hike I noticed the first evidence of Spring in our natural environment. First always to put out green leaves is the Wax Currant Bush, I also saw the first very small buds on the Desert Olive bushes. These will soon be dense yellow flowers covered with bees. Life is on the move in our local canyons!. Great observations in my paradise! Adding an artistic touch to the commonplace. My themes: Planet, Climate, Food, Health. “I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” John Burroughs 1837 - 1921.

Morning Sun Worship

“ODE to the Winter Sun.” A unique petroglyph is carved into the face of a basalt boulder that faces the sunrise, high on a volcanic hill east of Flagstaff, Arizona. Appears to me to be a devotional act. Spring 2017. Great observation in my paradise! Adding an artistic touch to the commonplace. My themes: Planet, Climate, Food, Health. “I go to Nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” John Burroughs 1837 - 1921.

Spring is trying to squeak through.

San Francisco Peaks… Sharing my view of the northern Arizona Peaks from my location on a Turkey Hills meadow. Looked the same a thousand years ago when the people who built these pueblos lived here. Where’s my time machine? Smartphone camera.
